Josefsplatz 6 Vienna A-1010, Austria

Organizational Status: Independent institute, founded in 1958.

General Description: OSI was founded under the auspices of the former Austrian Ministry of Education and carries out activities covering the fields of historical, geographic, and economic research as well as the organization of various conferences. Originally, OSI had an almost singular position in scientific activities related to the Socialist Countries of Europe, forming a Western bridgehead to Eastern Europe. After the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989, OSI expanded and diversified its activities to other fields of social sciences (research on national minorities and intercultural relations, education and science politics, politology, ecology, etc.) but maintained its central focus on historical and geographical research. Core competences in OSI's research activities and service functions are spatial disparities from a current and historical perspective as well as national, political, regional, and cultural identities. These activities refer to the postcommunist countries of Central, East, and Southeast Europe with a focus on comparative studies and regional (subnational) differentiation.
