General Description: IRI was established by the Pontifical Catholic University in Rio de Janeiro as a research and graduate teaching institution dedicated to the study of international affairs. It concentrates on six core research areas. In its Regionalization and Integration Processes program, IRI focuses on the formation of MERCOSUL from a comparative perspective, in light of initiatives such as the EU and NAFTA, emphasizing the political, institutional, economic and social aspects of its historical, institutional and functional analyses. International Institutions investigates the ways the international system is established and analyzes existing authority structures, especially international and transnational organizations, international regimes, and the principles and mechanisms of hegemonic order in the international system. Brazilian Foreign Policy and International Relations focuses on foreign policy analysis from different theoretical perspectives and addresses the political, economic and military variables that explain Brazilian international relations. The International Political Economy program investigates the relationship between transnational economic processes and the political power structure of the international system.
