Organizational Status: Independent institute, founded in 1983.

General Description: IL, at the time of its founding, placed a high priority on translating, editing, and publishing books and booklets written by both foreign and Brazilian authors. Gradually, other activities have been initiated, including lectures, seminars, articles for the Brazilian press, and active exchanges with other similar institutions in Brazil and abroad. One recent project produced a series of policy papers on social issues, such as education, health, social security, energy, the financial system, and industrial policy. IL also began the regular publication of NOTAS, which provides an analytical and critical examination of important bills under discussion in the Brazilian congress. Since 1990, IL has directed annual colloquia in Rio de Janeiro for the Liberty Fund, which has inspired similar conferences financed with local funds.
