Organizational Status: University-affiliated institute, founded in 1990.

General Description: HKIAPS is a social and economic research institute characterized by its study of Hong Kong, mainland China, and the Asia-Pacific region. HKIAPS seeks to accomplish its mission by undertaking research of practical and lasting significance on key social, political, and economic issues, and disseminating its research findings to a worldwide audience. The institute has established seven strategic research programs: (1) Cultural Relations and Identities in East Asia; (2) Gender Research; (3) Hong Kong and Asia-Pacific Economies; (4) Political Development of Hong Kong; (5) Social Indicators and Social Development of Hong Kong; (6) South China Program; and (7) Urban and Regional Development in Pacific Asia. There is a strong policy orientation in all of these research programs. The institute's Telephone Survey Research Laboratory provides services to researchers who wish to use telephone survey techniques to facilitate their research. The laboratory also collects public opinion data of academic and social value and regularly presents the results of telephone polls on public issues to the public and welcomes sponsorship, commissions, or collaboration from interested people and organizations.
