Organizational Status: City-founded organization, founded in 1989.

General Description: ICSEAD, established by the city of Kitakyushu with the support of various private organizations, conducts research in the fields of economics, business and social development in East Asia. Center researchers collaborate with researchers from other universities and research institutions; through these activities, ICSEAD contributes to the promotion of economic research on the development of East Asian nations, including Japan. The center's research division consists of three sections: Section 1 focuses on trade and investment issues pertinent to international economic policy; Section 2 focuses on industry studies, including analysis of seaports and urban environmental problems associated with industrial activity; and Section 3 focuses on quantitative analysis, including analysis of consumer and firm behavior. In particular, ICSEAD compares the economic activities of multinational and local firms in East Asia. The center also supports the work of researchers from other organizations conducting research on economic and social problems in East Asia through a program of competitively awarded contracts and provision of funding for visiting researchers. In addition, the center engages in several public service functions, including the ICSEAD public lectures and seminars, which are open to the interested public. Annually, ICSEAD co-sponsors the Wharton Executive Program in Kitakyushu with the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Its library has a relatively comprehensive collection of materials (including books, journals, magazines, newspapers, statistical data and electronic media) on East Asian economies and is open to anyone wishing to conduct research on East Asian economies.
