Organizational Status: Semi-governmental institute, founded in 1978.

General Description: KREI aims to support the establishment of agricultural policies to foster the development of agricultural and forestry technology in order to increase farm incomes as well as agricultural and forestry competitiveness, through its comprehensive and extensive research into and studies of agriculture and forestry economies and the development of rural communities. Responsibilities include medium- and long-term agricultural and forestry development planning and agricultural policy research; research into the supply and demand of major commodities and medium- and long-term project studies; support for cooperation and exchange programs between South Korea and North Korea in preparation for unification and studies on North Korean agriculture; research into international agricultural and trade policies and support for agricultural negotiations; the promotion of farmers' welfare and research into the development of rural communities; surveys on rural forestry communities; and support for and administration of the development of research projects in agricultural and forestry technology.
