Organizational Status: Governmental institute, founded in 1956.

General Description: LEI's scientific activities are carried out according to five main research directions approved and financed by the government of Lithuania: (1) the development of energy economy planning methods, investigation of the safety and reliability of power plants and their impact on the environment, efficient energy consumption, and renewable energy sources; (2) investigations in the fields of thermal physics, fluid mechanics, and metrology; (3) the simulation of complex systems, development of their control methods, and technologies; (4) investigations into the aging of construction elements in energy systems and the development of new multifunction materials; and (5) investigations into combustion and plasma processes in the fields of fuel saving, the reduction of environmental pollution, and the thermal decontamination of materials. In parallel with these works, applied investigations are undertaken for power companies and other organizations as well as corresponding programs, specification of standards, and regulatory activities concerning energy sector issues. The implementation of international programs and investigations carried out on the basis of bilateral as well as multilateral contracts with foreign partners forms an important aspect of the scientific activities of the institute.
