Organizational Status: Independent NGO, founded in 1985.

General Description: MIER undertakes independent and high-quality problem-oriented research into economic, financial, and business issues facing the country and provides advice on macroeconomic management, development, and future economic perspectives. In undertaking this task, MIER seeks to achieve the following objectives: (1) to serve as a bridge between the government, the private sector, and universities and become a focal point for economic, financial, and business research in the country; (2) to undertake economic research projects commissioned by clients in the public and private sectors; (3) to collaborate with other research institutes at home and abroad on topics relevant to the country; (4) to publish and disseminate the results of its research work and organize symposia and conferences to promote the sharing of ideas and views; and (5) to undertake the occasional training of officials from government agencies and private sector organizations. In recent years, the above goals have been extended to cater for the research and training needs of countries outside Malaysia as well. The research activities of MIER are organized into four research divisions, namely, macroeconomic trends and forecasting, policy studies, industry studies, and area studies.
