General Description: TESEV forms a bridge between academic research and the policy-making process. TESEV carries out research based on scientific principles and shares its findings with the widest possible audience. TESEV focuses on the most important policy questions facing Turkey and the region in the new century. Its recent studies have addressed such issues as the fight against corruption, transparency and accountability, state reform, and the role of Islamic organizations in Turkish economic life. Current research projects include a wide-ranging analysis of Turkish-EU relations, focusing on substantive issues that will be involved in accession negotiations. A major study launched in cooperation with World Bank examines the difficulties involved in efforts to crack down on corruption and includes a comprehensive survey of the nature and extent of corruption together with policy proposals. TESEV's goals are to encourage independent and alternative thinking on democratization and transparency, study and analyze the rapid social and cultural changes taking place in Turkey as well as the government's responses to these challenges, and support Turkey's accession to the EU and implementation of the Copenhagen Criteria.
