Organizational Status: Independent institute, founded in 1958.

General Description: IISS is a center for research, information, and debate on the subjects of military strategy, arms control, regional security, and conflict resolution. The objective of the institute is to promote, on a nonpartisan basis, the study, discussion, and exchange of information on the influence of modern and nuclear weapons and warfare upon the problems of strategy, defense, disarmament, and international relations. IISS is a primary source of accurate, objective information on international strategic issues for politicians and diplomats, foreign affairs analysts, international business, economists, the military, defense commentators, journalists, academics, and the informed public.
