Organizational Status: Independent institute, founded in 1969.

General Description: IFS is a research institute established to provide advanced economic analysis independent of government, political party, or any other vested interest. IFS exerts influence through publications, the media, close contacts with civil servants, and regular meetings with Cabinet and Shadow Cabinet members. IFS's research looks particularly at the UK's tax system, considering the likely effects of fiscal policy on every section of the population. IFS aims to disseminate its research as widely as possible and function a source of authoritative, impartial comment on fiscal matters for the media.
