Organizational Status: Independent institute, founded in 1960.

General Description: ODI was established as a center for the study of development and humanitarian issues and as a forum for the discussion of problems facing developing countries. In its early years, the institute played a role in raising the profile of development issues on political agendas. Since then, with the proliferation of campaigning NGOs, the institute has built up a substantial body of research expertise. ODI's main objectives are to inspire and inform policy and practice that lead to the reduction of poverty, the alleviation of suffering, and the achievement of sustainable livelihoods in developing countries. This is achieved by combining substantive applied research, practical policy advice, and policy-focused dissemination and debate.
