Organizational Status: University-affiliated institute, founded in 1966.

General Description: SPRU, affiliated with University of Sussex, was established in response to a growing awareness of the contributions that science and technology could make to economic progress and to improving the quality of life. SPRU is a policy research institute in the areas of science, technology, and innovation (STI), comprising over 70 research and support staff and over 100 postgraduate students. SPRU's objectives are to undertake multidisciplinary academic research in STI developments and their impact on society; generate new empirical data, methods, concepts, and theories that explain the place of STI in the global economy; offer postgraduate training that provides students with the analytical and practical skills needed to understand and respond to the STI challenges of the future; advise government policymakers in the UK and internationally on the economic, social, and political challenges presented by developments in science and technology; and work with firms to develop the tools and techniques needed to manage STI for maximum competitiveness.
