Organizational Status: Independent NGO, founded in 1956.

General Description: The Asia Society, from its founding as public education institution dedicated to fostering communications between Americans and Asians, has provided commentary on political issues that affect Asian and Americans, new and innovative ways to educate those who educate the young in the United States, opportunities to see authentic Asian art and performing artists, and forums for government and business leaders of both continents to meet for the exchange of ideas. The Asia Society's activities span a variety of areas and take place throughout the United States and on both sides of the Pacific. It publishes scholarly commentaries and analyses of issues that affect Asians and Americans, sponsors international seminars and conferences for business people and journalists on various aspects of Asian affairs, and provides a forum for Asian and American government, academic, and corporate leaders to study and address issues of common concern. The Asia Society reaches audiences around the United States through its headquarters in New York and regional centers in Washington DC, Houston, Los Angels, and San Francisco, and Asians from all walks of life participate in the Society's work through its Hong Kong and Australian Centers, representative offices in Shanghai and Manila, its International Council, and programs throughout Asia.
