Organizational Status: Independent institute, founded in 1916.

General Description: The Institution's activities are to improve the performance of American institutions and the quality of public policy by using social science to analyze emerging issues and offer practical approaches to those issues in a language aimed at the general public. In conferences, publications, and other activities, the Institution bridges scholarship and policy-making, bringing new knowledge to the attention of decision-makers and affording greater insight into public policy issues. Four research programs-Economic Studies, Foreign Policy Studies, Governance Studies, and Metropolitan Policy-plus the Center for Public Policy Education and the Brookings Institution Press carry out the Institution's activities.

Annual Budget: USD 33 million (2003)
