Organizational Status: University-affiliated institute, founded in 1961.

General Description: EGC, founded within the Economics Department of Yale University, has the objective of studying and promoting the understanding of the economic development process in low-income countries and how development is affected by trade and financial relations between these countries and more developed ones. EGC functions within an academic framework; it does not take on the responsibility of directly advising governments or managing policy issues on a day-to-day basis. EGC develops data collection methods for national accounts and household surveys that document economic and demographic changes as well as new analytical and statistical techniques for the study of macro-and micro-relationships representing the behavior of individuals, families, firms, and sovereign nations. The work of EGC is conducted by a regular Yale faculty staff; an equal number of visitors, including postdoctoral fellows, who come from all over the world and undertake their own research projects during their stay at the center; and administrative, clerical, and research support staff.
