Organizational Status: University-affiliated institute, founded in 1949.
General Description: WEAI is the center for Asia-Pacific activities at Columbia University. With programs spanning China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Tibet, Korea, and the countries of Southeast Asia, its mission is to train new generations of Asian experts in the humanities, social sciences, and in professional careers as well as enhance the understanding of East Asia in the wider community. Through its research projects, conferences, and seminars, WEAI creates an international forum to address critical issues facing the Asia-Pacific region today. The goal of the institute now is to prepare for the challenges facing Asia in the 21st century.
