NIRA held the 10th Academic Forum on East Asian Economy as part of the East Asia-Pacific Forum on March 1, 2007. This forum, the successor to the Conference on the South China Economy which commenced in 1995, considers the potential for development of an East Asian Community, and is co-hosted by NIRA (Japan), CDI (China Development Institute: China), CIER (Chung-Hua Institute for Economic Research: Taiwan) and KIEP (Korea Institute for International Economic Policy: South Korea) almost every year. This year's forum was held at NIRA, and commemorated the 10th anniversary of the forum, reckoned from the first Conference on the South China Economy.

In its early days, the forum provided an opportunity for researchers from Japan, China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan to hold discussions based on a strong conviction that increasing interdependence in the South China Economic Area would act as a driving force for the establishment of an East Asian Community. South Korea has participated since the sixth forum, which has increased the scope of the forum to encompass consideration of closer economic relations in Northeast Asia. Discussions at this year's forum focused on three regions - South China, Taiwan and Northeast Asia. Detailed consideration was given to the present status and specific problems of each region, and the status of the movement towards an East Asian Community was the subject of comprehensive discussions.

Distinguished participants from overseas organizations this year included Luoli Li, Vice Chairman of the CDI, Daigee Shaw, President of CIER, and Chang Jae Lee, Vice President of KIEP, who engaged in vigorous discussions with NIRA's President Motoshige Itoh and Japanese researchers.
