The Fourth International Conference on South China's Economy NIRA hosted the Fourth International Conference on the South China Economy in Macao on December 9 and 10 2000 with the Chunghua Institute for Economic Research (Taiwan), The Hong Kong University of Science and Engineering, and the China Development Institute. The first of these conferences was held in Shenzhen, China in 1995, the second in Hong Kong in 1997, and the third in Okinawa in 1998. This time around the conference was held in Macao, a year after it reverted back to Chinese rule in December 1999, and the region has attracted notice as one of the four regions of the "two banks" of China.
South China's economic zone is composed of Southern China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao and the purpose of the workshop was to discuss the future economic prospects of this remarkable area, and to explore the possibility of further cooperation between Japan and Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland. The discussion took in the recent enormous changes to the situation in the region against the background of Chinese-Taiwanese relations, the return of Hong Kong and Macao to China, the East Asian currency crisis and so on. Researchers and representatives from each country collectively discussed the dynamic changes in the region and their wider meanings and implications. For more detail ( in Japanese only ) about this conference please click here
Globalization, Human Security and Japan NIRA, has been carrying out research on "human security and the new role of citizen society" since July, 1999. With globalization progressing issues such as unemployment and increasing wealth and income disparities have become more acute and have surfaced as new problems. The purpose of this research is to focus on the weaker members of humanity in developing countries from the perspective of citizen's society and to ask what is required to make more secure conditions for such people a reality? This report summarises the December 2000 workshop which included participation by local researchers, NGOs and other concerned persons who met to discuss the report's completion. Topics covered include:
a The Situation in Central America, South Asia and Africa.
b Landmine Eradication Movements and Disabled People Campaigns
