Since 1994, NIRA has held regular international symposiums on local autonomy in collaboration with the National Academy of Public Administration (NAPA) in the United States. This publication is a summary of the Fourth NIRA-NAPA Joint International Symposium on "Sustainable Development, Environmental Conditions and Public Management," held at Keio University in Tokyo on July 26-28, 2000. A total of 45 scholars and administrative officials participated in this conference, representing China, South Korea and Thailand in addition to Japan and the United States.
Looking towards the realization of sustainable development, participants considered various perspectives, analyzed contemporary social problems, and explored appropriate directions for administration. This publication will contribute to deepening understanding of the local autonomy policies implemented in the countries participating in the conference, including Japan and the United States.
