Organizational Status: Independent institute, founded in 1965.

General Description: KIIS seeks to promote international peace by fostering a better understanding of the political issues that impact people's lives and hopes to not only advance an improved theoretical understanding of the world but also provide judicious analyses and specific policy recommendations to minimize, ameliorate, and alleviate contentious issues that threaten international peace. Founded as a research institute, KIIS became an independent body in 1969 and began sponsoring annual international conferences focusing on timely topics of international relations. KIIS maintains a considerable library of research materials and has assisted and sponsored the research of numerous resident and visiting scholars and graduate students. Reflecting the seismic changes of the past two decades, the research agenda of KIIS has also shifted, but the cold war on the Korean Peninsula persists as new problems have emerged. KIIS therefore seeks to readdress the issues of the beginning of the 21st century as well as anticipate the new challenges surfacing in the new millennium with its research interests.
